US-MA-NW Electric Supply Industry

The United States is a leader in the production and supply of energy and is one of the world’s largest energy consumers. U.S. energy companies produce oil, natural gas, coal, renewable fuels, as well as electricity from clean energy sources such as wind, solar, and nuclear power. The transportation sector leads Massachusetts end-use energy consumption, followed by the residential and commercial sectors.

Overall, more electricity is consumed in Massachusetts than is generated in the state, even though, on a per capita basis, electricity consumption in Massachusetts is among the lowest one-fourth of the states. Almost one in six Massachusetts households use electricity as their primary energy source for home heating. Although many Massachusetts homes have air conditioning, most homes do not use air conditioning during the state’s mild summers.

In Norwood, the Norwood Municipal Light Department is an electric distribution company that provides electric service to over 15,000 business and residential customers in the town. They take a great deal of pride in offering exemplary service; oftentimes resolving outages in a fraction of the time that neighboring town’s experience. In addition, the electricity rates in this city are quite interesting because of the average 40% cheaper than the neighboring city.

Currently, Norwood City has 2 solar power project that is really interesting, the solar landfill project and the solar roof at the vehicle parking area. The city will buy electricity from both solar power plant in the cheaper rate than buying from the transmission grid system which creates a direct benefit to the Town of lowering the cost of electricity. Moreover, the town also gains more benefit from utilizing the appropriate location such as the unusable landfill, and car parking area beside the train station.

In my opinion, Norwood city has lots of renewable energy potential, especially for the solar power plant. Many buildings in the city that have a flat roof without any solar panel installation. Moreover, Norwood Light Department is also very well prepared about the disruptive technology by sharing information with other cities such as Scituate and Sterling city.
